Kamakura City
Kamakura was the first medieval shōgunate capital of Japan, a historic seaside town near Yokohama. The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kōtoku-in) is one of Japan's three great Buddha statues, solemn in bronze. Tsurugaoka Hachimangū is the chief guardian shrine of Kamakura, with stunning cherry blossoms along its approach. Kamakura-kōkōmae Station became an anime pilgrimage site due to "Slam Dunk." Shōnan Beach (Shichirigahama) has white sands, offering views of Mount Fuji and Enoshima. Komachi-dōri shopping street is full of gourmet food and souvenirs. Local delicacies include Kamakura seafood bowl, whitebait bowl, Kamakura manjū, sakura mochi, matcha desserts, and Enoshima takoyaki, which is springy and delicious.
