Zhuzhou, historically known as Jianning, is an industrial city where the Beijing-Guangzhou and Shanghai-Kunming railways converge, boasting abundant natural landscapes and red tourism resources. Key attractions include the Mausoleum of Emperor Yandi (the resting place of the Yan Emperor, a sacred site for ancestral worship), Shennong Valley National Forest Park (primeval forests, waterfalls and streams), Yunyang Mountain, and Liling Ceramic Valley (a centre for ceramic culture and art). The local cuisine is predominantly Hunan-style. Youxian smoked tofu is rich in bean flavour with a firm texture; Liling stir-fried noodles are spicy and flavourful. Specialties also include Yanling yellow peaches and Zhuzhou assorted vegetables.
