Shangrao
Shangrao is the gateway to northeastern Jiangxi, offering both natural landscapes and red tourism. Key attractions include Mount Sanqingshan (a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site with granite peak forests and stunning cloud seas and sunrises), Wuyuan (China’s most beautiful countryside, with rapeseed flowers in spring and sun-drying scenes and red maples in autumn), Poyang Lake (China’s largest freshwater lake and a paradise for migratory birds), and Gexian Village (a quaint ancient town with fairy-tale vibes and brilliant night scenery). Local delicacies include Wuyuan steamed tofu—tender and flavourful, steamed red-carp fish, Q-shaped Yiyang rice cakes, crispy-on-the-outside and tender-on-the-inside lamp-shaped glutinous rice cakes, as well as free-range chicken soup and braised pork with dried bamboo shoots, all brimming with rustic mountain flavours.
