Lost 1926 Charley Toorop Painting of Rotterdam River Goes on Public Display in Museum Depot
A long-lost painting by Dutch artist Charley Toorop has returned to Rotterdam a century after its creation. Titled Gezicht op de Maas, the oil on canvas measures 62 by 84 cm and depicts the city's river and harbour against a dark evening sky. The work was produced during Toorop's stay at the Victoria Hotel in the summer of 1926, a period when the expanding port city and its international arrivals deeply influenced her artistic development.

Out of six paintings created during that summer, only five were previously accounted for. The sixth work was recently rediscovered and acquired by Stichting Droom en Daad. Starting 9 July, the painting will be exhibited to the public for the first time inside the Depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Visiting the Museum Depot

Visitors planning to see the exhibition at the Depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen must secure a time slot in advance, as entry without one is not permitted. The museum also houses other notable works by Toorop, including her 1928 Zelfportret and the 1941 to 1950 piece Drie generaties.
