The annual Big Book Giveaway in Singapore offers readers a chance to collect pre-loved library books while supporting reading habits across the island. Organised by the National Library Board, this event gives pre-loved library books and audio-visual items a second lease of life.

What to Expect at the Giveaway

Visitors can bring home books and audio-visual items completely free of charge. The selection features various genres, including fantasy, mystery, and adult non-fiction. Additionally, Mother Tongue titles are available for both adults and children. To make browsing less overwhelming, all books are sorted and categorised by genre.

Last year's edition marked the 10th anniversary of the giveaway and coincided with the National Library Board's 30th anniversary. A record 60,000 pre-loved books were made available, making it the biggest edition to date.

How the Event Works

Before attending, participants should note the entry and browsing rules established by the organisers.

Based on the previous edition, visitors needed to scan a library-compliant ID card, an NLB eCard, or obtain a QR code day pass for entry. Attendees are advised to check Public Libraries Singapore's Instagram page for updates on the admission process.

Each visitor is permitted to bring home up to 10 books or audio-visual items for free. To keep things fair for everyone, attendees are given 10 minutes to browse and make their selections.

Donating Your Pre-Loved Books

Visitors looking to clear space on their bookshelves can also contribute items to the event.

While the 2025 edition permitted visitors to donate up to 50 books, this year's event allows individuals to bring up to 100 books per person.

Donations must meet specific National Library Board guidelines. Materials that will not be accepted include:

* Religious materials

* Textbooks and assessment books

* Magazines and annual reports

* DVDs, CDs, and other audio-visual materials

* Damaged or heavily worn books

In addition to book donations, visitors are encouraged to make a financial donation to MINDS, the National Library Board's adopted charity, while browsing for their next reads.
