Birch Coffee Bar: Burleigh Heads' Newest Early-Morning Brew Spot

Birch Coffee Bar is Burleigh's newest coffee shop.

The Gold Coast is a city of early risers — after a sunrise surf, run or workout, the next logical step is coffee, and the closer the better. Now the new Birch Coffee Bar gives Burleigh locals a closer shot of caffeine, opening from 5.30am for those who like to seize the day.

For owner Drew Quinnell, the idea was simple: he wanted coffee, and there wasn't a cafe nearby. So he built one.

Birch is Drew's first cafe, designed as an easy grab-and-go spot for local workers and early birds. When he's not behind the coffee bar, you'll find him out back making El Chori Chimichurri Sauces — the 100 per cent natural range he created with his wife Florencia Petersen using an Argentinian family recipe from his Aunty Celina. Those sauces have also found their way onto Birch's shelves, along with a few other homely touches.

Just like his sauces, Drew hopes Birch brings locals together — a place to grab a morning coffee, discover new flavours, swap food recommendations and connect with the people who live and work nearby.

Manager Lilly Smoel has filled the small-but-mighty space with personality, with birch timber, greenery and a large image of Burleigh Headland keeping the location firmly in view. Alongside the El Chori jars lining the shelves, you'll find books, vases, old-school cassettes, cameras and retro furnishings that create a relaxed, welcoming feel.

The kitchen is working hard behind the scenes too. It's takeaway-style, but they're taking no shortcuts.

Gourmet toasties are made with Burleigh Baker bread and come in ham and cheese, a cheese blend, or veg and halloumi. And you can bet El Chori Chimichurri Sauces are getting in on the toastie action too.

For those really racing the clock, there are oat cups ready to grab and go, while the treat cabinet is stocked with house-made Basque cheesecake, protein balls and slices.

Fridays are for the sweet-toothed, when fresh cinnamon scrolls take centre stage — and trust us, they're worth getting out of bed for.

Coffee comes courtesy of Lacey's Lane Coffee Roasters, but Birch doesn't stop at your standard flat white. Expect cold brews topped with brown sugar or Biscoff cold foam, plus the aptly named Chocolate Crack Iced Latte.

There's also ceremonial-grade matcha from OHAYO, with house-made strawberry syrup or cold foam to crown on top for those who like to take their matcha up a notch.

For the health-conscious, there are juices and smoothies in mango, berry and vanilla.

Whether you're coming straight from the surf, heading to work, or simply can't function before your morning caffeine hit, Birch is ready to perk you up.
