One factor sets Singapore apart above all: safety. A striking 93 per cent of residents described the city as safe — the top score for that measure across the whole ranking.
Compiled by Time Out together with Intrepid Travel, the ranking drew on surveys of more than 24,000 locals worldwide, covering nightlife quality and affordability, safety, diversity, excitement and how easy it is to find a sense of community. A panel of Time Out editors and nightlife experts also had their say, narrowing the field to a final 20 — with only the highest-scoring city from each country making the cut.
Singapore's appeal isn't built on glitzy superclubs so much as a nightlife scene that has turned increasingly DIY, niche and community-driven. Collectives like Thugshop, Darker Than Wax, Ice Cream Sundays, GrooveTop and CultureSG are carving out their own corners of the city, while parties for the over-30 crowd, hip-hop dinner clubs and day-to-night raves give Singaporeans fresh reasons to stay out late.
The established names aren't standing still, either. Zouk reopened in June after a multi-million-dollar revamp, unveiling a reworked space with new lighting and sound tech, while Capital and Phuture keep catering to more specialist tastes. Singapore's bar scene is also growing more experimental, with newcomers such as Milli, Bae's Cocktail Club and Kossa rethinking the classic night out. And for those after a mellow listening session, the city's expanding crop of vinyl listening bars delivers just that.
So who tops the leaderboard? Bangkok takes the crown, followed by Berlin and New York City. The Thai capital's anything-goes blend of street-side drinking, mega-clubs, rooftop bars and late-night eats pushed it straight to first place, while Berlin continues to flex its legendary club culture alongside a fresh wave of underground collectives and pop-up parties. New York, meanwhile, keeps its nightlife gloriously scattered — spanning raves, dance parties, wine clubs and community-led nights — earning it third spot.
