Bottom line: to get a decent spot, arrive around midday, and brace yourself for going hours without a bathroom. 1) On NYE, Times Square is sectioned off from the afternoon, and the later you arrive the harder it is to reach the core viewing area - locals suggest arriving by noon to 1-2pm. 2) Once inside a pen you cannot easily leave and re-enter, and there are almost no portable toilets, so drink less beforehand - wearing adult diapers is common advice. 3) Large backpacks, folding chairs and alcohol are banned, and you will pass security; staying warm is critical - midnight temps often drop below freezing, so layer up with heat packs, hats and gloves. 4) Transport: many streets close and some subway exits shut, so ride the subway to the edge and walk in; expect huge crowds on the way out. 5) To skip the ordeal, book a nearby hotel/restaurant NYE party or an observation-deck package - pricier but comfortable.
