Giant Glowing Seesaws Take Over Herald Square: NYC's Newest Free Summer Attraction

收藏Montreal-based design studios Lateral Office and CS Design have brought their internationally acclaimed interactive installation Impulse to the heart of Manhattan, setting up eight supersized illuminated seesaws in Herald Square for a full month of free, all-ages fun.
Running from July 22 through August 21, the installation transforms the busy Midtown plaza into a giant playground where every ride triggers a symphony of LED lights and original sound compositions. The more people who hop on, the more dramatic the display becomes — a fitting tribute to the city that never stops moving.
A Playground Meets Public Art
Commissioned by the 34th Street Partnership, Impulse reimagines the classic playground staple through a distinctly contemporary lens. Each seesaw is fitted with sensors that translate motion into cascading patterns of light and sound, creating an ever-shifting audiovisual landscape powered entirely by the people who show up to play.
The design encourages spontaneity: strangers seated at opposite ends of a beam find themselves collaborating to produce the brightest light sequences. It's public art that quite literally runs on human connection.
