Rome Opens Cinemas & Libraries for Free During Heatwave: 'The Big Chill' Plan

The plan, called "Il grande freddo" (The Big Chill), was unveiled on Wednesday July 22 at Rome's City Hall. Here are the participating venues — transforming into "climate shelters" for the summer.

Eleven cinemas with free screenings, eleven libraries with open access, and complimentary water distribution: Rome is turning its cinemas, libraries, and cultural spaces into "climate shelters" to tackle summer heatwaves. The plan, dubbed "Il grande freddo," was presented on Wednesday July 22 at the Campidoglio by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Culture Councillor Massimiliano Smeriglio.

Free Cinema Screenings & Cultural Spaces

Free cinema screenings start Thursday July 23, with two daily sessions: the first between 1:00 PM and 2:45 PM, the second before 6:30-6:45 PM, depending on the film. The same movie screens simultaneously across all participating venues, spread across different city districts: from Cinema Adriano in Municipio I to The Screen Cinemas in Ottavia (XIV), from Lux in Municipio II to Uci Maximo on via Laurentina (IX), and Uci Roma Est in Lunghezza (VI).

Free entry also to the Sala Squarzina at Teatro Argentina, with books available to browse, and the Palaexpo auditorium, currently hosting Emergency's photography exhibition "Revelation. Lorenzo Meloni."

Libraries Open Until August 4

From July 23 to August 4, eleven libraries across Rome will be open with no registration needed, offering free water. Participating venues include: Renato Nicolini library on via Mazzacurati in Corviale, Vaccheria Nardi on via Grotta di Gregna, Elsa Morante at its substitute location in Ostia's tourist port, and Joyce Lussu on via Costantino. The libraries are spread across different parts of the city to be the nearest refuge for all residents.

Also attending the launch were Simona Cives, director of Rome's "Library System and Cultural Centres" institution, Edoardo Zanchini, director of Roma Capitale's climate office, and Leandro Pesci, president of Lazio's regional cinema association (Anec).

How to Join

Participation is free and on a first-come, first-served basis. The initiative is promoted by Roma Capitale's Culture Department, with executive production by Zètema Progetto Cultura, and carried out by Anec Lazio with support from Rome's civil protection.
