From casual beachfront cruises to leg-burning hinterland ascents, here's your insider guide to the very best rides on the Coast.

The Darren Smith Memorial Cycleway

Arguably one of Australia's finest coastal bike rides, this 48-kilometre route sweeps from Coolangatta in the south almost to the top of the Gold Coast. Don't be intimidated by the distance — it's predominantly flat and you're under no obligation to tackle the full stretch. Set off from Coolangatta and pedal alongside some of the planet's most celebrated surf breaks, pausing for a bite at a surf club or combining a morning ride with brunch and a dip. The path continues past Surfers Paradise all the way to Paradise Point, hugging the stunning Broadwater.

Long-Distance Routes for Serious Cyclists

O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat

Feeling strong? This 70-kilometre out-and-back gains a full kilometre of elevation as it climbs into the World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park, home to some of the planet's largest remaining tracts of ancient Gondwana rainforest. It's arguably the toughest ride in the Gold Coast hinterland, clocking in at around 2.5 hours. Begin in the village of Canungra — grab a pre-ride coffee at The Outpost — then tackle the hairpin bends that twist deeper and deeper into the forest before emerging at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat. The silver lining: it's all downhill on the way home.

Currumbin Valley

Currumbin Valley remains one of the Gold Coast's best-kept cycling secrets. Barely a stone's throw from the beach, you'll find yourself cocooned by rolling green hills, hobby farms and roadside honesty boxes piled with homegrown produce. Kick off beside Currumbin Beach with a flat white from The Salt Mill, then watch for kangaroos lounging in paddocks alongside cattle and horses. Refuel at Pasture & Co, perched beside the innovative Eco-Village, before pressing on to the valley's end. On the return leg, reward yourself with a cold craft beer at Balter Brewing in Currumbin Waters. The loop clocks roughly 40 kilometres.

Hinze Dam

This scenic 60-kilometre route winds from the hinterland to the art-deco charm of Murwillumbah just across the New South Wales border, where a clutch of trendy lunch spots await. The scenery is spectacular — waterfalls tumbling beside the road, ancient trees arching into green cathedrals — and you'll descend nearly a kilometre in elevation. (If that sounds intimidating, an e-bike is a very sensible option.) Start outside Nerang, next to the impossibly pretty Little Nerang Dam.

Family-Friendly Bike Paths

Clip on those helmets — this is the perfect family outing. Whether you've got a toddler in a bike seat, a kid on training wheels or a teen who prefers a scooter, the Gold Coast delivers miles of flat, smooth paths far from busy roads.

The Esplanade, Burleigh Heads

This is cycling at its most blissfully leisurely. A wide, flat shared pathway runs parallel to the beach from Burleigh Point to North Burleigh, forming part of the Darren Smith Memorial Route. Glide through beachside parkland beneath pandanus palms, with the ocean glittering beside you. There are plentiful pit stops for coffee and gelato, plus playgrounds dotted along the foreshore. At the North Burleigh end, lock up the bikes and scramble to the lookout for a sweeping coastal panorama.

Main Beach to The Spit

Another winner for little legs — though bigger kids will be equally smitten. Start just north of Surfers Paradise at Southport Surf Club and cruise along foreshore parkland past the iconic Palazzo Versace hotel. Sea World appears on your left; listen for roller-coaster screams and splashing from the water park. Detour into the sheltered bays for a swim, then cap things off with a cold drink or lunch at Southport Yacht Club on the return leg.

Gold Coast Mountain Biking

Gold Coast Bike Park

Tucked into the bushland of Mudgeeraba, this gravity-focused park (formerly Boomerang Farm Bike Park) boasts 14 trails spanning every style and ability level — technical singletrack, flowing green runs, gravity-fed jump lines and e-MTB terrain. A day pass includes uplift, so there's no grinding back up the hill between runs. Keep an eye out for events ranging from grassroots community meet-ups to flagship festivals like Gravity Jam and Summer Sessions/Phat Fridays.

Nerang Mountain Bike Trails

Just west of Nerang, 1,700 hectares of forest hide more than 20 kilometres of purpose-built trails — good enough to host the world's best at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Beginners can ease in on the Casuarina Grove Circuit, while experienced riders can test their mettle on technical singletrack threading through rocky glades, drop-offs and creek beds. Fire trails offer an easy backbone, with tight singletrack spurs beckoning you deeper into rainforest and open eucalypt forest.
